#4 Beyonce Knowles: Role Model?

It is a simple fact that Beyonce's performance at the Super Bowl was amazing. Her performance was wild and crazy, using 120 dancers, a 10-piece female band, and many backup singers; not to mention countless people who worked on the lights, choreography, sounds, etc. With the reuniting of Destiny's Child and Beyonce's all-star athleticism,  Beyonce's performance easily placed itself atop the top best Half-Time performances of all time. There has been much debate over the show, though. People either rave about its greatness, or criticize her sensual moves and revealing uniform. The truth is, Beyonce's performance was sensual. She writhed and moaned and displayed herself to millions of people, and it was phenomenal. Those who criticize her performance say that it's not good for a woman who has so much influence and power over growing girls to be acting in such a way, but her performance wasn't done to attract the attention of a man. It wasn't bred out of self-consciousness or the need to prove something to someone. Beyonce is a role-model because she is confident in herself and her sexuality. The point isn't that every single person has to dress in a leather leotard and shake their hips, the point is that women and girls are supposed to be comfortable in their selves and their sexuality. Whether that means never exposing a single inch of your skin or showing yourself off to millions of people, the message is to be happy with yourself and do whatever makes you comfortable.

Let's not forget the fact that Beyonce's stage was only inhabited by women. Her band, the Sugar Mamas, sparked interest with audiences. We need performers like Beyonce because an all-female band still sparks interest. Male-dominated bands get no special attention for having all-male performers because being a man is the norm. Of course male singers would only have male guitarists and pianists. That's normal. It's not normal for an all-female performance to appeal to all people, not just girls, and that needs to change. There aren't a lot of opportunities for girls in events like the Superbowl. It's not like they can all of a sudden employ ladies to play on the teams, are there is a serious lack of female commentators. The only place for a woman in the Superbowl is to be an object in an ad or to be a tall, sexy cheerleader. For Beyonce to perform and steal the show, she has effectively established herself as a role model for all.

  1. I absolutely agree with you, Katey. Society in this present day and age have created this idea of the perfect woman when the real perfect woman is one that is comfortable in her skin, like Beyonce. She is definitely an inspiration because she pushes the boundaries of what is the norm, is successful in doing so, and is comfortable with the way she is. That is something to be proud of and inspired by.

  2. I agree with you too about her being a role-model for confidence and admitting who you are because at the end of the day, you want your child to feel good about themselves and their place in the world, and you cannot do that if you are forever hindering and censoring their growth.
On the other hand, there are a lot of female bands in other parts of the world. Unfortunately, i feel that most of their world-wide popularity is gained through utilizing and displaying 'feminine wiles.' Beyonce I admit has great skill but some of these said bands gain their fan base from their looks, and demonstrate (for me) no good skills in their industry.

  3. I completely agree with you Katey. I personally am a huge fan of Beyonce, because of the self confidence she carries herself with, but all the same,I feel like because so many girls and women look up to her as a role model, she should not sell her body out to the world as immensely as she does and rather help to integrate a sense of self respect in females. We are not sex symbols and should be respected base on our personalities, rather than our bodies. That being said though, I still do really appreciate her self confidence with everything that she does.

  4. I agree with you that one should always be confident in one's ways, and be comfortable with yourself. Beyonce definitely establishes herself as a notable figure who is not afraid of being unique.
However, there are definitely all-female groups that have more than a fanbase of women. Many K-Pop all-girl groups also have 'fanboys' within their audiences. And though it seems like these groups may be gaining other audiences through sexual appeal, one could also argue that they are just being themselves, and happen are comfortable with how they look and how they act, which lead people to like them. To conclude, Beyonce really radiates a sense of self.

  5. Can I just say that Beyonce is the greatest. I completely agree with you in portraying her as a role model. Beyonce has always been extremely confident in her skin and girls need to learn from her. She doesn't have the perfect model figure, but she is beautiful regardless and she's proud of it too. The media has always been enforcing the idea of the perfect body shape of a woman and stressing that a tight hourglass figure is what makes one beautiful. Beyonce, however, does an exceptional job in dispelling this misconception. Her halftime performance emphasizes that the power and confidence of women are what make us beautiful, no matter what society has to think.

  6. Although I am not a huge fan of Beyonce, she is a good portrayal of an ideal model for people everywhere. It is admirable that she is confident, albeit a little revealing, about her self and displays it proudly. She doesn't care about the biases thrown about her and is only displaying her true talents by being who she is. That's the only thing that matters and our society should slowly forget the paragons of beauty that are unrealistic.

  7. Completely agree with your interpretation of her provocativeness in her performance. As someone who enjoys listening to Marilyn Manson and has seen him perform, I appreciate that you realize how some artists are there to give the message that being yourself is OK. Manson is someone who also uses a lot of sexual imagery in his performances and for exactly the same reasons as Beyonce (in my opinion). Its all about breaking social norms and coming to terms with the fact that everyone is different.

  8. I completely agree with you Katey, just because a woman chooses to show her body off confidently on stage does not make her promiscuous or a bad role model. She portrays the message to many girls that they don't have to be a stick thin model to be comfortable with their body and perform in front of people.
